Centre for
Policy Design

The Centre generates a repository of knowledge on environmental policy. We conduct in-depth policy analysis, develop thematic policy strategies and produce policy briefs, factsheets, reports and white papers to advance the understanding of environmental policy in India.

Given that ecosystems typically straddle administrative boundaries, effective implementation requires strong collaborations and meaningful partnerships amongst various policy actors involved in the landscape, such as the environmental, water, forestry, agriculture, defence, rural development, energy, and mineral resource management sectors, as well as private sector entities, citizen groups, and civil society.

(Policy Brief)

The Indian government’s approach to dog population management for the last two decades –the animal birth control (ABC) program –has yielded poor results. Aside from its implementation failures, the ABC is scientifically unsuited to the scale and severity of the harms posed by free-ranging dogs.

This policy brief focuses on the need for grassland conservation in Maharashtra. Tropical grasslands and savannahs are important for millions of people whose pastoralist livelihoods depend on this natural ecosystem. It is home to diverse forms of wildlife including the blackbuck and the Great Indian Bustard. Savannah grasslands are also key to addressing climate change because they sequester huge amounts of carbon.

(Policy Brief)

COP 26

(dummy text ) UN Climate Change conferences (or COPs) take place every year, and are the world’s only multilateral decision-making forum on climate change with almost complete membership of every country in the world.   To put it simply, the COP is where the world comes together to agree on ways to address the climate crisis, such as limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, helping vulnerable communities adapt to the effects of climate change, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
