This report presents a detailed examination of how biodiversity conservation canbe integrated with efforts to foster community well-being in Thirupudaimaruthur,a village panchayat in Tamil Nadu. Renowned for its nesting and roosting sitesof various wetland bird species, the village is home to India’s first conservationreserve, the Thirupudaimaruthur Bird Conservation Reserve (TBCR). Inaddition to its rich avifauna, the village also hosts the revered NarambunatharSwamy Temple, a 1,000-year-old Shaivite temple, and lies along the sacred Tamiraparani River, which serves as a vital source of water for agriculture-based livelihoods.
