Fellow in Residence, Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation Planning

Sailendra Dewan is from Kurseong in the Darjeeling Hills, West Bengal. He earned his MSc and PhD in Zoology from the Department of Zoology, Sikkim University. His research interests lie in macroecology, community ecology, biodiversity conservation, and long-term ecological monitoring, with a particular focus on mountain ecosystems of the Himalaya. Over the past decade, he has investigated the distribution patterns of faunal taxa and the ecological and evolutionary processes shaping biodiversity across elevational gradients and socio-ecological landscapes of the Eastern Himalaya. At ATREE, his research integrates long-term biodiversity monitoring with studies on the impacts of climate change, land-use change, and habitat degradation to generate evidence for conservation planning and sustainable landscape management in the Indian Himalayan Region. He is also committed to promoting biodiversity awareness and strengthening conservation through research, capacity building, and engagement with local communities and stakeholders. Before joining ATREE, he served as a Guest Faculty in the Department of Zoology at Sikkim University.
