Invasive alien species (IAS) are among the most significant drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. India, with its rich and varied ecosystems, faces mounting ecological, economic, and social costs from the spread of non-native species introduced intentionally or inadvertently. IAS threaten native biodiversity, disrupt ecosystem services, and undermine livelihoods, particularly those of rural and forest-dependent communities. Despite growing recognition of these threats, policy and management responses remain fragmented and under-resourced. This policy report brings together current information on the impacts, management, and governance of IAS in India. Its purpose is to highlight knowledge gaps, assess existing institutional frameworks, and propose pathways for a more coordinated and effective national response.
