Western Ghats Nilgiris Landscape India – Tackling lantana in tiger and elephant habitats. It is a collaborative project by ATREE, NCBS, Shola trust and WWF India

PI:

ATREE initiated a novel approach towards controlling and managing invasive Lantana camara in 2004. The decentralized Lantana Craft Centre (LCC) model encouraged the local community to make furniture using Lantana sticks and facilitated marketing, which in turn generated livelihoods as well as income. The Soliga artisans made furniture and other utility products besides elephant sculptures using the Lantana sticks. The artisans produced as many as 100 life-size elephant sculptures in collaboration with Shola Trust and sent them to the UK. Currently, there are about 25 households involved in making elephant sculptures, lampshades, furniture and utility products and they earned Rs 19 lakhs in one year.
