Postdoctoral Research Associate

Dr. Kripa M. K. has over 12 years of research experience in remote sensing, GIS, and geospatial analysis of forest, mangrove, and agricultural ecosystems. Her research combines remote sensing, Google Earth Engine (GEE), artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical modelling, and programming to address challenges in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem monitoring, ecological restoration, climate change, and carbon dynamics. She has expertise in developing geospatial and data-driven approaches for carbon sequestration, biomass estimation, gross primary productivity, vegetation physiology, fluorescence modelling, and sustainable ecosystem management.

She has contributed to projects on mangrove assessment, forest productivity, terrestrial carbon cycling, biodiversity monitoring, and agricultural applications of geospatial technologies.

Her research at Space Applications Centre (SAC) focused on national assessment of mangroves, specifically on large scale mapping and monitoring of forest productivity, decadal changes, species and structural diversity including the assessment of their biodiversity, physiology (Photosynthesis and Fluorescence), biophysical characterization Leaf Area Index (LAI), canopy closure and canopy gap fraction), phytosociology (plant density, girth, height, basal area etc.) and conservation. She has also explored the biophysical parameters of several dense forests of India.

She worked with Prof. V. K. Dadhwal for her post- doctoral studies and explored the Terrestrial Carbon Cycle of India. She explored the litterfall, carbon flux and pools, biomass estimation and forest carbon cycle with the aid of meta-analysed data, statistical modelling and remote sensing techniques.

She served as a Scientist at the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology and completed 11 projects on biodiversity assessment. Her research continues to investigate modern techniques for modelling forests, mangroves and other plants and their implications on climate change, carbon sequestration and productivity.
