T N Khoshoo Memorial Award and Lecture 2025

Instituted in 2004, the T.N. Khoshoo Memorial Award and Lecture honours the legacy of Dr. Triloki Nath Khoshoo (1927-2002), a renowned environmental scientist and the first Secretary of India’s Department of Environment. Dr. Khoshoo played a seminal role in shaping India’s environmental policy and was also one of the early trustees of ATREE.
The annual award recognizes individuals, organizations or communities whose work has significantly advanced the fields of environment, conservation, or sustainable development. The award includes a cash prize and citation supported by the T.N. Khoshoo Endowment Fund. Over the past 21 years, the programme has recognised prominent individuals and organizations such as Mahesh Rangarajan, Vidya Athreya, Joss Brooks, and Ashish Kothari, with Memorial Lectures delivered by luminaries including the Dalai Lama, Elinor Ostrom, Madhav Gadgil, Partha Dasgupta, and M.S. Swaminathan among others.
About the Theme
This year, the programme focuses on the theme of human-wildlife interactions. Across India’s diverse land- and seascapes, humans and wildlife have long shared space and resources, forming relationships that are complex, dynamic, and deeply intertwined. Over time, these interactions have evolved significantly, shaped by shifting socio-cultural, political, and economic forces. Today, rapid and large-scale anthropogenic interventions have transformed habitats as well as people’s relationship with their wild ancestors. In this context, it is more important than ever to understand these interactions in depth and explore meaningful ways for people and wildlife to coexist. This year’s theme calls for inclusive, science-driven, and compassionate approaches—rooted in both ecological knowledge and community wisdom—to navigate the human-wildlife interface. It invites us to embrace the idea that humans and more-than-human beings are co-creators of shared social-ecological spaces, continually shaping and influencing one another.
Memorial Lecture: Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka

This year, the TN Khoshoo Memorial lecture will be delivered by Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, a globally renowned wildlife veterinarian and conservationist from Uganda. Dr. Gladys is the founder of Conservation Through Public Health, and the recipient of numerous awards including the Ashoka Fellowship (2006), Whitley Gold Award (2009) and the Edinburgh Medal (2022). In 2022, she was also proclaimed the United Nations Environment Programme’s Champion of the Earth for Science and Innovation. Her work on mountain gorillas exemplifies how trust, innovation, and community-driven efforts can lead to lasting conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Her holistic approach integrates human health, wildlife protection, and community well-being, and her work over the last 25 years has ensured that the once Critically Endangered mountain gorilla is currently accounted for by at least 1063 individuals.
Approach to Selecting the Awardee
The 2025 T.N. Khoshoo Award will recognize a changemaker (individual or an organization) working at the intersection of the human-wildlife interface and grassroots action, guided by the following principles: field-based, grassroot effort towards addressing coexistence; integration of science, traditional knowledge, and demonstrated impact in policy, behavioral change, or species/ habitat protection. The selection process will be consultative and inclusive, seeking nominations from across India, especially those spotlighting under-recognized, impactful work on the ground. The selection committee will consist of Fellows at ATREE and external experts.
