Dr. Shaik is a DBT Research Associate for the project “Halting from Oblivion: Biotechnological and Ecological Approaches for the Conservation of a Gondwanan Oyster in the Western Ghats, India” at ATREE. He is currently focused on conducting field surveys, collecting freshwater oyster samples, and analyzing ddRAD and Sanger data to understand phylogenetic and biogeographic patterns within the Gondwanan lineage. His work contributes to conserving and understanding the crucial insights into the genetic diversity, population structure, and historical biogeography of a little-known yet ecologically important freshwater endemic oyster species of the Western Ghats. The study’s outcomes will contribute to National Biodiversity Databases and support evidence-based policymaking for freshwater ecosystem management in the Western Ghats—a recognized world biodiversity hotspot. Thus, the research plays a critical role in bridging molecular ecology with conservation practice, ensuring the long-term survival of endemic species under increasing environmental threats.

This work builds upon his previous experience as a National Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Indian

Institute of Science, where he delved into the molecular phylogenetics and biogeographic analysis of India’s often-overlooked subterranean fauna. There, he explored the chaos and complexity of phylogenetic and biogeographic patterns of very ancient lineage (Bathynellacea) across hidden landscapes and uncovered how isolation, vast timescales, and deep geological histories dating back even before the formation of Pangea have shaped the current distribution of this bizarre and fascinating subterranean species buried deep down for millions of years. Together, these experiences reflect his enduring commitment to uncovering hidden dimensions of biodiversity and advancing scientific understanding that underpins effective, meaningful conservation.
