ATREE is seeking a motivated Research Associate (Hydrologist) with expertise in semi-arid and arid hydrological systems. The position offers a unique opportunity to combine field-based research, hydrological modelling, and advanced remote sensing to develop sustainable and water management strategies for drought-prone landscapes in India.
• Conduct hydrological assessments including rainfall-runoff modelling, evapotranspiration analysis, and groundwater recharge estimation in arid and semi-arid regions.
• Process and analyze satellite-based datasets (e.g., SMAP, MODIS, Sentinel) using Google Earth Engine, QGIS, and other geospatial tools.
• Apply hydrological models (e.g., SWAT, WEAP, HEC-HMS) and custom scripts (Python, R) for water balance and drought forecasting.
• Design and execute field-based studies (e.g., check dam performance, aquifer monitoring, soil moisture evaluation) in rural and peri-urban areas.
• Support the design and evaluation of nature-based solutions, rainwater harvesting systems, and managed aquifer recharge interventions.
Required Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, Hydrogeology, or related fields, with a focus on dryland systems
• Minimum 2 years of professional experience in hydrology after completing a master’s degree.
• Demonstrated expertise in hydrological modelling, remote sensing, and spatial analysis.
• Proficiency in tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine, Python, or R.
• Strong understanding of traditional water systems and local water governance practices.
• Excellent communication, documentation, and analytical skills.
Desirable Skills
• Experience working in South Asian dryland regions (e.g., Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka) or comparable agro-climatic zones.
• Familiarity with community-based water management approaches, citizen science initiatives, or participatory water governance models.
• Prior engagement with research institutions, private sector entities, research-focused NGOs, development programs, or climate adaptation initiative
What We Offer
• A chance to contribute to high-impact research on climate resilience, and sustainable hydrological systems.
• A dynamic, field-intensive role in collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
• Access to a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment at one of India’s premier environmental think tanks.
