Conservation of Biodiversity and Community forests in Arunachal Pradesh, Eastern Himalayas
Team: Rajkamal Goswami, Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi, Duman Talom, Dungkeng Alee, Rohan Baishya and Senan DSouza
The Siang Valley, a major river valley in Arunachal Pradesh and part of the transboundary Yarlung Tsang Po-Brahmaputra system, holds one of India’s most forested landscapes. Yet a tiny fraction is legally protected. Rising local and regional pressures threaten their ecological integrity, particularly outside the Protected Area (PA) network.
The project, implemented under ATREE-Biocomp (exploration parts) and FGL (CCA facilitation and management part), focuses on Siang Valley and Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh. It aims to strengthen grassroots stewardship and formal conservation systems across Eastern Himalayan forests, safeguarding biodiversity and sustaining ecological benefits at scale. ATREE will collaborate with indigenous communities to prioritise and manage high-conservation-value sites outside PAs and support PA managers with capacity building, biodiversity monitoring and protection strategies.
