Addressing knowledge gap on the Critically Endangered Chinese Pangolin, Manis pentadactyla, in the Kanchenjunga Landscape-India

Team: Sunita Pradhan, Priyanaka Rai, Rohit George

Our project, implemented through SM Sehgal Foundation Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation, focuses on Sikkim and West Bengal in the Kanchenjunga Landscape. Little is known about the Pangolin population in India, although trade figures indicate that the species is under severe hunting pressure. Northeast India is a hub for Pangolin sourcing and trafficking routes, with North Bengal playing a prominent role. Despite this, Pangolins remain understudied, with a glaring absence of basic information on their distribution and status.

Our Pangolin Conservation Project documents information on pangolin presence, distribution and extinction risks. This involves ecological research, trade mitigation strategies, outreach and awareness building exercies, livelihood programmes and transboundary engagements.  So far, we have been working in the tea landscapes and Protected Areas of North Bengal.
