Dr. Siddappa Setty is an ethnobotanist with 24 years of experience working in tribal areas in South India on community and biodiversity conservation. He focused on ecological, social and economic aspects of forest resource, sustainable use and participatory resource monitoring. He is a program leader under Forest and Governance program and coordinating two community conservation centers of ATREE. He played an important role in improving livelihood of the indigenous community called Soliga. He is currently coordinating a project funded by USAID “Managing India’s Forests for Biodiversity and Human Well-being in the Face of Global Environmental Change.

  • Poverty alleviation in biodiversity rich areas through sustainable use of forest resources.
  • Sustainable use of Non-timber forest products (NTFPs).
  • Bringing scientific knowledge and approaches with traditional knowledge.

  • Major invasive plants in India -- Lantana camara, Eupatorium, and Parthenium hysterophorous and their impact on biodiversity. Participants identified the spread of lantana as a major issue in their forest areas. They noted that bird dispersal of seeds, tree cover loss and soil condition were some of the major reasons for lantana spread workshop with the Soliga community in July 2010.
  • Facilitated University of Kansas students study abroad visit to BRHills and Bandipur restoration project. And gave a talk on Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood work carried out in BRT and restoration work in Bandipur, June 2010.
