Development Officer


The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) was established in 1996 as a non-profit organisation headquartered in Bangalore, India with an initial focus on assessment and monitoring of biodiversity. Job Profile

As the Development Officer, you play a crucial role in supporting the main fundraising function of the Development Office. Apart from working with the Development Team, you will work closely with Accounts, Legal and Project Teams, including the key Principal Investigators of ATREE to understand Project fundraising needs. As the Development Officer, you will be expected to build a fundraising portfolio for a diverse set of projects that include conservation (such as biodiversity conservation outside protected areas and management of community conserved areas), restoration (such as restoration in buffers and corridors of key biodiversity areas, lake/grassland/riparian/wetland restoration), agroforestry, sustainable livelihoods, environment education and  policy-related work. Existing and planned projects are located within key biodiversity hotspots of India including the Himalayas, the Northeast, Western Ghats and Central India.

The job is an on-site position based out of ATREE’s Head Office in Bengaluru. You will report to the Sr. Manager Development and work collaboratively with the Development Team to strengthen our fundraising efforts.


Donor Data Management 

  • Build, manage and maintain ATREE’s Donor Database and the Salesforce CRM software and ensure data is current, relevant, accurate and is in alignment with related data from Finance, Accounts, ATREE USA, Principal Investigators (PI) and other Departments
  • Manage and maintain a current and relevant marketing Database for ATREE on fundraising opportunities by conducting periodic and timely research on potential Donors, HNIs, CSRs, Foundations, Multi and Bi-Lateral Agencies along with thematic focus areas, geographies, contact information, budgets etc.
  • Conduct research on other fundraising and visibility opportunities for ATREE by maintaining a current database of Corporate/CSR Calls for proposals, visibility events, Awards, RFPs from Govts and Foundations, Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) etc
  • Ensure that relevant funding/visibility opportunites are socialized to the DO Team/PIs/Students in a timely and effective manner
  • Build and maintain an accurate and current database of potential project ideas and submitted projects by PIs and students @ATREE and map them to existing or new grant opportunities
  • Maintain a relevant and current list of ATREE’s legal and compliance related documents as required by the DO/PIs for Due Diligence processes and ensure access for the same to stakeholders in a timely and effective manner
  • Maintain and manage Donor documents for all proposals submitted including concept notes, Proposals, MoUs, Addendums, fund request letters, Reports, Utilization Certificates etc. 


Donor Management  

  • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, HR & Accounts to complete Due Diligence process of All ATREE institutional Grants and Strategic/DO led grants in a timely and effective manner. Provide support where necessary to PIs/Students to ensure timely completion & submission of the same for PI/Student led grant proposals. 
  • Maintain relevant schedules for all projects (fund request letters, reports, UCs, 80G, 10BE etc.) and socialize within PIs/Project Managers/Accounts etc. to ensure timely completion and submission to Donors. 
  • Ensure all Donors are kept informed and connected with the work of ATREE by ensuring timely and relevant communication in the form of Emailers, Annual Reports, greetings etc.


DO Core Functions 

  • Support the Senior DO Team in the creation, management and socialization of relevant Dashboards and Reports as needed by Senior Management, from the data maintained by the DO 
  • Manage subscriptions to various relevant portals and oversee general communications for the Development Office
  • Assist and work closely with the DO Team to ensure timely completion of departmental
    activities and goals
  • Ensure adequate documentation of meetings/work conducted and manage a centralized and easily accessible repository of DO related documents


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, business, public relations, or related field
  • Competence with Excel and any donor management systems
  • Experience in writing press releases, fundraising letters and donor reports
  • Legal or accounting experience a plus
  • At least three years of experience in fundraising (CSR/Foundations etc.)
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills
  • Motivated, professional, organized, have a strong attention to detail and a knack for research
  • Ability to successfully balance priorities while managing multiple tasks and projects
