Regional Conference (s) on
SCOPE OF PRODUCTION FORESTRY FOR CARBON SEQUESTRATION
14-15th November, Bangalore; 23-24th November, Bhopal; 7-8th December,
Dehradun & 18-19th December 2006 in Kalimpong
CALL FOR PAPERS
Climate change due to global carbon emission threatens to bring large-scale disruptions
to the current pattern of life on earth. Developing countries like India need to take proactive
steps to meet the challenges posed by global warming. Tropical forests are known
to sequester carbon at a rate much higher than other forest types and hence have potential
to mitigate climate change impacts. A vibrant production forestry sector can apart from
sequestering atmospheric carbon also promises to bring additional benefit of supplying
much needed wood, including raw material for various forest based industries like paper,
ply-board and others. In this context there is a need to understand the potential of
production forestry in carbon mitigation in India and to analyze the policy and procedural
constraints that hinder the achievement of this potential.
Papers on following themes are invited: i) Carbon sequestration by forest and plantation
ii) Promoting uses of wood for durables for maximizing carbon sequestration iii) Relative
capacity of tree species/clones for higher carbon sequestration and iv) Policy initiatives
needed to promote higher levels of investment in restoration/reforestation/plantations and
agro-forestry.
Abstract of the papers not exceeding 350 words should reach ATREE by 25th September
2006. Authors of the selected papers will be invited to participate in the conference and
ATREE will bear their travel expenses limited to AC II fare and boarding and lodging at
the conference venue. Papers should be submitted for participation in one of the four
Regional Conferences and same should be indicated by the authors in their abstract
submission.
