ATREE at the Inaugural `Design Bengaluru' Event

 

Veena Srinivasan, Fellow, ATREE was part of a panel discussion at the inaugural Design Bengaluru event held on February 7, 2018. The event was jointly organised by the University of Chicago and the Urban Development Department, Government of Karnataka to announce the launch of a new initiative - "Bengaluru Innovation Challenge" to address Bengaluru's pressing energy and environmental challenges by tapping into grassroots creativity.

The panel discussion titled "Can Evidence-Based Policy Solutions better drive Urban Development" was moderated by Dr Ken Lee, EPIC-India Director. The panelists including Shri. Mahendra Jain, I.A.S, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development Department, GoK and Mr Sanjay Sridhar, Regional Director for South and West Asia, C40, discussed the challenges Bengaluru faces and the possible role of innovation and evidence-based policy in addressing them.

 

Wetlands for Sustainable Urban Future - A Panel Discussion on World Wetlands Day

 
On World Wetlands Day, the Community Environmental Resource Center (CERC), ATREE, organized a policy level panel discussion focusing on Ramsar Convention theme - ‘Wetlands for Sustainable Urban Future’. The panel discussion focused on conservation and sustainable management of Cochin wetlands under the theme of ‘Wetlands for Kochi’s Sustainable Future’, to understand the services provided by the wetlands to urban lives and strengthening the existing policies. The panel discussion was followed by a poster and photo exhibition.

ATREE at the State Water Budgeting Workshop by National Water Mission


Veena Srinivasan, Fellow, ATREE was invited to be a National Resource Person on behalf of National Water Mission at the inception workshop on "State Water Budgeting" held on February 23-24, 2018 at Kolkata. The workshop was attended by 30 high-level government officials from West Bengal state and was presided over by the Principal Secretary, Water Resources, Mr Subrata Gupta, in addition to other experts and World Bank representatives. 
 
Veena's role was to train the participants on the basic concepts of water budgeting and how to address the challenges they might face in preparing the budget. She also presented the case study of Bangalore's water budget.

Talk on Long-term Monitoring and Impact of Lantana camara on Native Biodiversity in Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve

 
Siddappa Setty, Fellow, ATREE gave a talk on long-term monitoring and impact of Lantana camara on native biodiversity in Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve at a workshop organized by Karnataka Forest Department on February 16, 2018. Around 30 forest department officers and civil society organizations participated in the workshop.

Review workshop on `The Rural-Urban Interface of Bangalore: A Space of Transition in Agriculture, Economics and Society'

ATREE hosted a two-day review workshop on `The Rural-Urban Interface of Bangalore: A Space of Transition in Agriculture, Economics and Society' - a collaborative project under a joint agreement between India's Department of Biotechnology and the German Science Foundation.

Led by the University of Kassel and the University of Gottingen, Germany and University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore along with partners including NIANP, ATREE, ISEC, IIST, Azim Premji University and ISWT, the workshop was attended by 60 researchers from both the countries. The multi-disciplinary project aims to investigate the complex transitions in agriculture, economics, and society that are associated with urbanisation processes in the rural-urban interface of Bangalore.
