Field activity: Phenology Monitoring:
As the DNA club members were given an introductory talk on Phenology during the month of January, they were taken out into the field in the month of February and briefed on the following:

  1. How to select and identify trees
  2. Monitoring methods
  3. Data collection and Observation

The students have chosen the trees and tagged them. They will monitor them once a week including summer vacations.
Hands on activity : Designing greeting cards
Students designed greeting cards made out of thumb print for the Biodiversity festival.

5th February 2010: Film Screening
A Documentary on Global Warming by Al Gore was screened.

22nd February 2010: Institutional Visit
Students were taken to visit the ‘World of insects’ at Sri JCBM College Sringeri organized by the entomology club.

S.D.M Aided High School, Ujire
26th February 2010:
A meeting was held with the DNA club members to plan the activities during summer vacations. Monitoring programme which includes Bat census, Phenology of trees and Bird watching will be continued during the vacations.

8th February 2010: Film Screening: Documentary on Global Warming
17th February 2010: Activity: birds Beaks and Claws.
The DNA club members learnt about the different types of beaks and claws of birds and how both of these play a role in their survival

Vysarajapura Govt High School, T. Narasipura
Cultural Programme
DNA club members came up with a skit on Nature conservation and enacted the same on 18th of February at the school. The skit included topics like food web and the need to protect creatures like reptiles, harmful effects of plastic and the impact deforestation would have on the world.

BIODIVERSITY FESTIVAL
20th - 21st February 2010
Venue : Jaycees High School, Sringeri

DBT’s Natural Resource Awareness Clubs set up in five schools across Karnataka have been conducting various activities for the past two years. To mark the closing ceremony for the second year, ‘Biodiversity Festival’ was celebrated where all five schools got together to project their work.
Biodiversity festival started on the 20th of February with a visit to the medicinal plants garden at Menase. The next session included presentation by the DNA Club Coordinators of all five schools. This was followed by an interactive session with the DNA club members.
The Biodiversity festival was officially inaugurated in the afternoon by the organizers and invitees by lighting the lamp. Major Gajanan M Bhat, President of Jaycees Education Society presided over the function. This was followed by an introductory talk by the DNA club Program Coordinator, ATREE. The inaugural session was followed by a talk by the Chief Guest, Mr. Manjunath Chauhan, DFO of Koppa. A host of exhibits were put out along with the project works done by the students which included Posters, Scientific models, pen holders made of newspapers, paper bags, etc. This also was the day of cultural programmes wherein nature related Skits, Songs and dances were performed by the students.
The second day of the fest started with bird watching followed by a talk on Snakes by Dr. G.K Bhatt. Students were also shown preserved specimens of various species of snakes
The festival ended with a valedictory function presided over by Dr. Laxminarayan, Vice President, Jaycees Education Society which also included the award ceremony. The festival, which was educative and interactive, ended by facilitating the guests, Coordinators and the Organizers.
