International Certificate Course in GIS/RS Applications for Landscape Ecology

Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore
(http://www.atree.org/) is one of 14 International IDRISI Resource Centres set
up by Clark Labs, USA. ATREE is pleased to announce that it is offering a
comprehensive certificate course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and
Remote Sensing (RS) for landscape ecology applications. This intensive course
will provide participants with an opportunity to learn the principles of
landscape ecology and it’s application to areas such as conservation biology.
It will provide rigorous, individualized hands-on training in GIS/RS techniques
using state-of-the art software.
A set of 16-18 lectures will complement several practical exercises using IDRISI Kilimanjaro
and CartaLinx (http://www.clarklabs.org/) in order to expose participants to concepts and
techniques of landscape ecology and management of biodiversity. A short field assignment
based in the Western Ghats is designed to maximize the student’s exposure to applications
of landscape ecology in the field. Topics to be discussed will include: Basics of GIS/RS
data structure and analysis, Cartographic principles, Sampling and geo-statistics, Digital
Image Processing, Basic principles of remote sensing, Principles of landscape ecology,
Concepts of biogeography, Vegetation mapping, Measurement of biodiversity within landscape,
Spatial analysis and modelling of the distribution of biodiversity, Applications in
conservation planning and prioritization, and Socio-economic drivers of landscape

The faculty for this course are experienced and eminent researchers and scientists from Indian and foreign institutions.
Eligibility
The course is intended for early to mid-career professionals and students with a keen
interest in biodiversity conservation, natural resource management and GIS/ RS
applications in these fields. Candidates should preferably have exposure to
quantitative methods and scientific principles. Number of participants will be a maximum of 20.
Dates
This course was first offered in August, 2004. The 14-day course is tentatively scheduled for the first
two weeks of January / Febrauary 2007. (Course Schedule will be available for download 6 months before the start of the course).
Application Process
An application from the participant should contain: 1. A one-page justification by the
candidate of why this course is important to him or her. 2. Demonstrated aptitude or
interest in the area of natural resource conservation and management– projects, published
articles, essays, other relevant activities and professional membership. 3.
Recommendation by the Department Head or concerned supervisor. Only selected
candidates will be informed by e-mail.
A fee of USD 1,000 will be charged for international participants and INR 20,000 will
be charged for Indian and South Asian participants. Two fellowships are available
for deserving candidates with demonstrated need. The selected candidates will have
to deposit the course fee in advance through demand draft by July 10th. The fees
will include boarding, lodging and course material. Accommodation will be provided
on twin sharing basis. Separate provision for lady candidates will be made. Travel
expenses to and from Bangalore will have to be borne by the participants.
