TN Khoshoo Ecology and Environment Award for Schools announced
T. N. Khoshoo Memorial Award and Lecture, 2010
The seventh TN Khoshoo Memorial Award will honour Joss Brooks of Pitchandikulam Bioresource Centre, Puducherry; and Girish Sant of Prayas, Pune for their work on current environmental and ecological issues at an awards ceremony at India International Centre, New Delhi on May 11.
The TN Khoshoo Memorial Lecture, which reflects the environmental concern of the times, and direction of conservation thought, will be delivered by Dr RK Pachauri, Chair of the Nobel peace prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) on ‘The Scientific and Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change’.
This year the Khoshoo Endowment Fund will also announce the launch of the TN Khoshoo Ecology & Environment Award for Schools, in partnership with The Teacher Foundation and Wipro. This award is being instituted to seed environmental consciousness at a young, impressionable age, and thereby, prioritize conservation thought and action in routine decision making by the next generation. The award will be given to schools for catalyzing environmental thought and action among its students.
Acknowledging the challenge in making conservation studies practicable with the demands of today’s development, an endowment to advance interdisciplinary research in Conservation Science and Sustainability Studies will also be announced.
The Khoshoo Endowment Fund was set up in memory of the late Dr Triloki Nath Khoshoo, India’s first Secretary of the Department of Environment and environmentalist of international repute. It seeks to recognize outstanding contributions in the fields of ecology and environment in India. It has been set up by the Khoshoo family, along with partners who share its values of socially just conservation and environmentally sustainable development -- Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), and Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD, a Sehgal Foundation Initiative).
