ATREE is a leading non-profit, non-governmental research and knowledge institution in Asia and has been consistently ranked among the top 20 think tanks globally. ATREE’s Ecoinformatics group has been a pioneer in developing cutting-edge spatial, remote sensing and landscape analysis tools to address knowledge gaps in conservation and sustainability science. This includes the first systematic conservation prioritisation of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, new methods to quantify and map biodiversity and ecosystem services, comprehensive studies of climate change effects on tropical mountain systems, and mapping semi-arid grasslands. ATREE has also been a founding partner in establishing the India Biodiversity Portal and has some of the longest-running ecological monitoring sites in the country.

The Ecoinformatics Lab at ATREE is looking for a highly motivated researcher at the  Senior Research Associate or Postdoctoral level. 1. Work with senior leadership at ATREE to develop a long-term vision and strategy to strengthen ATREE’s capabilities in information science, data visualisation, low-cost sensors (mobile and static), data sciences and Ecoinformatics.
  2. Develop strategic partnerships across ATREE’s Centres and other organisations to advance ATREE’s capabilities in these areas.
  3. Develop short-term certificate courses and PhD electives in RS-GIS, data sciences and AI tailored to the environmental, ecological and earth sciences.
  4. Work with the development team and the leadership at ATREE to develop novel research and outreach initiatives.

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in geoinformatics, RS/GIS, data science or an allied degree with substantial experience (5+ years) in using geospatial information for conservation and sustainability.
  2. Advanced skills in RS-GIS and data or information sciences across multiple open-source and proprietary platforms with a demonstrated ability to write code in Javascript, Python or R.
  3. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead a team and work with multiple stakeholders and project collaborators.
  4. Demonstrated ability to write and present information clearly, concisely, and compellingly and publish peer-reviewed research in internationally recognised journals.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. A PhD in geoinformatics, RS-GIS, data science or an allied degree with some experience (2+ years) in using geospatial information for conservation and sustainability
  2. Experience in dealing with media and communications for improved data visualisation.
  3. Experience in academic settings, including designing or teaching RS-GIS courses and labs and assisting graduate students with geospatial data analyses.

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience. Interested candidates can send their CVs and supporting documentation (1-2 peer-reviewed publications, example code or 1-2 thematic maps as PDFs) as applicable to hr@atree.org. Please indicate “Ecoinformatics Lab: Senior RA/Postdoc application” in the subject line of your email.
