Book on "Invertebrate Diversity and Conservation in the Western Ghats"

The diversity and behavioural repertoire of invertebrates has always been inspiring for amateur naturalists and professional scientists. All over the world, this fascination for invertebrates have been encouraging studies on diverse invertebrates, helping us understand many fundamental biological processes, including ecological and evolutionary. Unfortunately, this is also the period of unprecedented loss of invertebrate diversity, thanks to agrochemicals and deforestation. Globally, there is an increasing concern over the loss of invertebrate diversity. This loss of invertebrate populations across ecosystems has serious impact on ecosystem health and livelihood of dependent communities.

Like many other tropical countries, very little is known about the diversity and distribution of invertebrates from India. This poor understanding of our invertebrate diversity is amply reflected in our national and regional conservation policies and goals, which is essentially formulated for large and charismatic vertebrates.

Western Ghats Invertebrate Research and Conservation Group is a network of experts and amateurs working for conserving invertebrates of the Western Ghats formed during the second meeting of the Western Ghats Forum (www.westernghatsforum.org) held at Coimbatore during December, 2005. The first meeting of the Network has decided to bring out an edited volume on invertebrate diversity and conservation of the Western Ghats, and a core working group was formed under Centre for Insect Taxonomy and Conservation (CITAC), ATREE, Bangalore to initiate the process.

The main objective of the proposed volume is to provide an overview of on going studies on the diversity, ecology, evolution, behaviour and conservation of invertebrates of the Western Ghats. We envisage this volume to be a benchmark publication on invertebrate diversity of the region. This will also be a valuable volume for next generation of invertebrate researchers and conservation managers of the region. We are inviting manuscripts both from national and international researchers working on the invertebrates of the Western Ghats for this volume. The broad thematic area and tentative time schedule are enclosed.

We are happy to invite you to submit manuscripts to be published in this peer reviewed edited volume on "Invertebrate Diversity and Conservation in the Western Ghats". Kindly send your Acceptance form for submission of your manuscript by e-mail on or before 20th of June, 2006. Please also suggest name and contact address of three referees for your manuscript. You will be regularly updated about the progress of publication of this volume.

Please note that the manuscripts will be peer reviewed before acceptance and decision of the referees will be final. If you have any further clarification you may please contact any of the coordinators mentioned below. We look forward for your valuable contributions, guidance and suggestions.
