Forest Ecology and Management
Enumeration of large and medium sized mammals in selected forests of south-eastern Karnataka.
Investigator: T.Ganesh
Location: Karnataka
Duration: 6 months
Description
Wildlife conservation in India has focused invariably on prime wildlife areas such
as sanctuaries and national parks. There has been very little effort to enumerate
and quantify the wildlife available outside these reserves. The proposed project
will determine the diversity and abundance of large and small mammals in the little
known forest areas of Karnataka. The areas of interest are the reserve forests in
the Kanakapura range in south Karnataka, which happen to be part of an important
elephant corridor. The objective is to enumerate mammal species richness in three
areas with different levels of protection and management. Sampling will be based
on direct and indirect methods and will be done twice in six months in three sites.
Findings will be analysed across season and sites.
