Collective action seems to be a popular mode of developmental action being tried out in
various contexts. There are different types of collective efforts with definite objectives,
origins, functions and diverse stakeholders. ATREE has been promoting women Self-help
Groups (SHGs) with the objective of fostering conservation-linked livelihoods in its focus
areas of Western Ghats. A tool package for comprehensive monitoring and assessment of these
SHGs is under formulation.
The objective is to find out methods of assessing the performance of SHGs based on various social,
economic and ecological parameters. The resulting process should be able to capture the factors
contributing to success or failures of any SHG and be able to suggest possible revival mechanisms.
A process developed based on indicators of participation, awareness and credit mechanisms, for
the women SHGs of Malai Madheswara Hills is being strengthened for applying in different contexts
of livelihood linkages to conservation.
