Natham CCC inauguration
The first Community-based Conservation Centre (CCC) was inaugurated on the 13th of March 2006 at Mangammal Salai, Natham.
This CCC is the result of active collaboration with the Covenant Centre for Development (CCD), Madurai. The Natham CCC is one of the five such centers that are at different stages of development in the forest-fringes of the Western Ghats under the Conservation and Livelihoods Programme of ATREE, supported by the SDTT.
Four hundred and forty community members from the region who belong to various groups that CCD-ATREE works with participated in the inaugural function. Other guests at the occasion included Dr. Ganesan Balachander, Ford Foundation, Dr.Karunagaran, Vice Chancellor, Gandhigram University, Mr.V.C.Nadarajan, Executive Director, CCD, Mr.N.Muthu Velayutham, Secretary, CCD, Dr.Ravi Chellam, Director, ATREE, Dr.Nitin Rai, Fellow, ATREE, Mr.Vijilious Muthu, Programme Officer, PWDS, Mr.Prabhakar, Programme Officer, Concern Worldwide and federation leaders from Sevaiyur, Suranum, Natham and Madurai, among others.
The CCC is envisioned as a local 'space' to strengthen community involvement and leadership in environmental sustainability. The CCC also will provide researchers, educators, development professionals, Government departments, NGOs, Panchayat functionaries, financial institutions and local traditional institutions a forum to engage in complementary planning and action towards the sustainable management of biodiversity in the landscape.
