6) Research Associate (1 Post) Forest Fire Management in India: Integrating Ecological and Cultural Contexts and Consequences
ATREE was established in 1996 to help curtail the rapid loss of India's biological resources and natural ecosystems and to address the environmental, social and economic dimensions of this decline. ATREE seeks to accomplish this goal by generating new knowledge, improving policy and governance related to biodiversity conservation, and incorporating environmental goals into mainstream society through conservation education and entrepreneurship that empowers citizens.

The ultimate aim of the study is to sensitize different constituencies to the ecological, socio-economic, and cultural roles of fire in Indian forests, as a means to initiate a renewed policy discussion on fires and fire management.
During this pilot study we aim to develop methodology for the assessment and analysis of remotely sensed data on forest types and forest fires, vegetation surveys, and the assessment of the role fire plays in people's use of forest resources. The project will be carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Silviculture, University of Freiburg, Germany, and the Centre for International Forest Research (CIFOR), Indonesia.
