Species recovery program for Red listed Medicinal plants in WesternGhats, India

Principal Investigators: R. Uma Shaanker and Dr. K. N. Ganeshaiah

Location: Central Western Ghats

Duration: Three years starting from Feb 2001 to Jan 2004

Description: The proposal aims to spatially map the red-listed species at the two Medicinal Plant Conservation Area (MPCA) sites using GIS tools and analyze their distribution features. The proposal also aims to assess the size structure of the red-listed species and compare them with those not listed under red-listed, examine the reproductive ecology of the red-listed species with a view to address the possible biological constraints, study the seed and seedling fitness attributes of the RET species and identify constraints if any in the regeneration of the species and finally develop a national agenda for species recovery program for red-listed plants.

Progress: Project completed in January 2004.

Output: The major out-put of the project are

  1. Spatial Distribution map of red-listed medicinal plants and species richness of all plant species was developed for two MPCAs viz., Charmadi and Kemmangundi.
  2. Demographic profile of red-listed and non red-listed species was assessed in two MPCAs.
  3. In depth study on the breeding system, reproductive success and nursery techniques for Nothapodytes nimmoniana, Saraca asoca, Dysoxylum malabaricum was completed.
