BELL PINS and ATREE Conservation Leadership Award for Tampiraparani landscape

Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) will be partnering with the Indrani Chelladhurai Charities to constitute the BELL PINS_ATREE award for Conservation Leadership. The first of these awards will be given away on May 1st, 2016 to honor Mr.Chelladurai, founder of Bell Pins at an annual ceremony in the BELL School's Auditorium, Palayamkottai. The award ceremony is being held on the birth centenary of its founder in reminiscence of his fondness for nature and love for the Tirunelveli-Thoothukudi landscape. BELL PINS is partnering with ATREE which has been working in the Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts through their Agasthyamalai Community - based Conservation Center(ACCC) for a couple of decades. ATREE has been recognized for its efforts in engaging with the citizenry and civil society for conservation in these areas.

BELLPINS_ATREE award comprises of a cash award with a citation. It will be given to an individual or an organization who have made an outstanding contribution to conservation action, environmental education or outreach from the Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.

A five member selection panel representing members of Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Tirunelveli circle, district administration of Tirunelveli & Thoothukudi districts and civil society groups apart from two members of ATREE and Bellpins, will identify the awardee each year. We also welcome nominations of individuals, and organizations for the award. A form has been designed that can be filled to help rank and judge the awardee in an objective manner.

The award will be given away in an annual ceremony organized by the Indrani Chelladhurai Charities and ATREE

The BELL group of campanies was established in 1952 by Mr.A. Chelladurai at Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli district. The name comes from the Tamil word Mani which was the second name of founder's mother Mrs. Nesamani. Initailly started with less than 10 employees, has progressed rapidly under his leadership to manufacture office ststionary products such as office pins, clips, staples including safety pins later diversified their wide range of products such as RCC pipes, steel wires, including printing and packaging. Besides BEL PINS with its coporate social responsibility has a school, a hospital and a college amidst other contributions.
