In a bid to highlight the importance and the conservation issues in wetlands, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), in association with the Directorate of Environment and Climate change, Govt. of Kerala, is organising a national photography competition and exhibition titled ‘Athijeevanam 2017.’

The event is planned in connection with the World Wetlands Day celebrations to be held at Alappuzha in February 2017. The exhibition is a tribute to the people who depend on the wetlands for their sustenance.

Wetlands are considered one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. India is very rich in wetland resources with a total of 67,429 wetlands, covering an area of about 4.1 million hectares. Millions of people directly or indirectly depend on these wetlands for their sustenance.

However, due to growing anthropogenic pressures, wetlands across the world are facing serious. In India, the situation is alarming. It is estimated that only 50% of our wetlands remain; they are being degraded at a rate of 2 to 3% per annum.

On behalf of the organising committee, we invite you to participate in this event and lend your whole hearted support in protecting these great natural heritages.
