2001 meeting of the Association for Tropical Biology : Introduction

About

The
tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, comprising extremely fragile
ecosystems, support more than 70 per cent of the world's biota in a complex
labyrinth of ecological interactions. These regions are also home to nearly
half of the world's human population and thus experience tremendous pressure
on their natural resources. In the recent past there has been a growing
concern over the accelerating rates of deforestation in tropical forests
and the consequent loss of biodiversity.
Reflecting these concerns and in seeking to review the threats and the possible solutions, an International Conference on Tropical Ecosystems : Structure, Diversity and Human Welfare is being organized at Bangalore, India from 15 to 18 th July 2001. The meeting will provide an opportunity for tropical biologists from Asian and neighboring countries to interact with biologists from the neo-tropics, and facilitate a first hand experience of the old-world tropical forests. It will be first time that an ATB meeting will be held in Asia. The meeting is being held under the auspices of the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore, India and the Association for Tropical Biology (ATB). It is co-sponsored by the Organization for Tropical Studies and will be co-hosted by leading national scientific institutions and organizations including the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, IUSSI-Indian Chapter, Bangalore, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi.
The meeting will address three major theme areas : Each
of these theme areas will comprise several symposia, which would include
keynote and lead talks, invited speakers and posters. In addition, contributed
papers are welcome in the general area of the conference themes. Depending
upon the number of contributed papers it is planned to organize separate
parallel sessions of the contributed papers. Participants desirous of contributing
papers under this section may directly contact the conference secretariat.
Post- conference meetings and workshops on selected theme areas are also
being organized.
The extended abstracts of the invited and contributed papers will be published and made available during the registration. Venue: The conference is being held in Bangalore, India's garden and science city. A picturesque city at an elevation of 950 meters, Bangalore, has a salubrious climate. The weather during July is comfortable and the monsoon is settled by the second week of July. Bangalore is well connected by air, road and rail to all the major cities in India The meeting will be organized at Hotel Ashok, Bangalore. Address for Correspondence The Secretariat,
